Stagecoach X5 is an inter-urban bus service linking Oxford and Bedford via Bicester, Buckingham and Milton Keynes. Service started in 1992 with an hourly service between Oxford and Cambridge, which was increased to half-hourly in 2005; [1] new vehicles were introduced in 2009 and again in 2015.
Luton & District was bought in 1994 by British Bus, [18] which, in turn, was purchased by the Cowie Group on 1 August 1996 and rebranded as Arriva the Shires in 1998. [19] [20] [21] Milton Keynes Citybus was acquired by Cambus (a privatised part of Eastern Counties), which was, itself, sold to Stagecoach in 1996.
In 2017, four Arriva Shires & Essex depots (Milton Keynes, Luton, Aylesbury and High Wycombe), and their routes, were transferred into the management of Arriva Midlands. The vehicles were renumbered in late 2018 and early 2019 to avoid multiple Arriva Midlands vehicles sharing the same fleet numbers. [21]
The Milton Keynes service was withdrawn in February 2006, with services to Luton increased in frequency and the operational contract transferred to Arriva Shires & Essex. [4] The dedicated service to Luton was withdrawn in May 2007, with services combined with the existing Green Line service 757.
