The parish church of the Advent was established in 1872, one year after the founding of the city of Birmingham, and was one of the first churches built in the new city. The first building on this site was completed in 1873, but was destroyed by fire on November 24, 1892.
The church is built in brick and is an aisled nave-and-chancel structure with a monumental bell tower. The sanctuary measures 54 feet (16 m) by 100 feet (30 m) with the ridge-line of the roof 50 feet (15 m) above the floor. The long sides of the building each feature six buttressed bays. Each bay contains a traceried window.
Two buildings, the church and associated school, were listed on the National Register of Historic Places as St. Paul's Catholic Church in 1982. [2] The stained-glass windows in the cathedral's aisles are the work of G. C. Riordan & Company of Cincinnati. They were in place when the church was first used. [6]
