The design was a joint project between the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) and Finnish company Oy Nautor AB who built the boats in Estonia. Production ran from 2005 until 2013 with 58 boats completed. Boats built for members of the NYYC were delivered as the NYYC 42 and boats sold to others were marketed as the ClubSwan 42.
A Cascade 42 syndicate from the Portland Yacht Club raced seven consecutive Transpacific Yacht Race, from 1967 to 1979. Their best place was 3rd in 1969, the best time 11 days, 15 hours. 64-year-old Ed Hart, on Hooligan, a Cascade 29, completed an unplanned circumnavigation.
In a 1994 review Richard Sherwood wrote, "the Vanguard 15 is designed for college/yacht club racing fleets. Rig is simple, and the boat is a strict one-design. The deck is rounded, for easy hiking ... With the daggerboard and light weight, the boat may be easily dry sailed — often helpful for fleet sailing." [5]

The Transpac 52 (TP52) is a class of yacht used for competitive 52 Super Series yacht racing, and the Audi MedCup previously, besides the world championship of the class. The class is recognised by the International Sailing Federation which entitles the class to hold an Official World Championships.
The Club 420, or C420, [5] is a derivative of the 420 and is not recognized by World Sailing or the International 420 Class Association. Designed by Vanguard boats in the 1970s, it has a heavier hull, reinforced for durability in institutional sailing, and a stiff, untapered mast.
More recently, Pearl River Productions has published a DVD providing a video history of the Wianno Senior class. That DVD provides updates to the class history beyond the 75th anniversary and discusses the recovery of the class from the devastating boat yard fire on December 10, 2003, in which 21 Seniors were destroyed, 18 of them the classic wooden Seniors.
