Just wanted to update everyone on the history of the 40X I just bought. I contacted the Remington company, and they said this of the 0322 serial number: "Your Model 40X was produced in 1955. In 1955 Remington announced 'an ultra precision .22 Long Rifle target rifle' the Model 40X Rangemaster.
40x John, Sorry but I must take issue with your following statement." A four digit serial number would indicate a mid-50s production date. a "B" would indicate 1955; "C" 1956, etc." In acuality the Four digit serial numbers ran into 1959 for Govt. rifles and 1960 for civilian.

Remington 40-X(B) Heavy Barrel, Commercial Release 22 LR converted to a repeater by Modicam Custom Rifles. Jonathan at MCR is the premier gunsmith who has done most of the conversions for these 40-X's. This is the precursor rifle to the Vudoo V-22, and uses the same repeater system and magazines.
The .22LR Remington 40X was first released in 1955 as a replacement for the model 37 target rifle. The 40X was a pet project of Remington's Mike Walker, who wanted Remington to have a rifle that could beat "all comers", including Winchester's target rifles.
Remington did have a model 700 in .22LR . It is called a Remington 40x Sporter. It had a 5 shot magazine. I purchased one in about 1973 for about $525. Now they are about $3500. Remington only made about 535 of the rifles. Unfortunately I sold mine NIB in about 1988 when I needed money for the family.
a) The Rem. CS cut the 40X recvrs. from stock and then 'roll stamped' the serial # and MODEL 40-X into the recvrs. Nothing else during initial recvr. manufacturing was placed on the recvrs at this time. The Remington logo, registered trademark, 22 LONG RIFLE were later 'etched' into the recvr. to minimize metal 'stress'.
The 1" at 100 yards for a 10 shot group is the standard. If you cannot get that something is wrong. At times you will likely do much better. I have some 10 shot groups in the .2-3 's from my Winchester 52's and 40X Remington rifles. Need the right conditions, right ammo and a little luck.
Re: Who makes a replacement barrel for a 22LR 40X? I agree that it is hard to wear out .22 LR barrels. My Remington 540x was used for many years by a high school shooting team, and I have put many thousands of rounds through it myself.
