This is a list of Iowa county courthouses. Each county in Iowa has a city that is the county seat where the county government resides, including a county courthouse, except for Lee County , which has two county seats and two county courthouses.
A frame building in Waukon was used as a courthouse from 1854 to 1861. [3] A more permanent courthouse and jail were completed in Waukon for $13,635 in 1861. [4] In 1867, the Iowa Supreme Court finally settled the debate when it ruled that Waukon was the county seat. [5] The building constructed in 1861 served as the county courthouse until 1940.
Iowa County’s first courthouse was a one-room building constructed in 1847. The county board of supervisors decided the building was not sufficient and they had another building built and it was completed in 1851. It became too small within ten years and a third courthouse was built for $2,000. [2]
After the county seat was moved to Iowa City a 56-by-28-foot (17.1 by 8.5 m), two-story brick courthouse, was completed in 1842. [2] A jail was built at the same time. The first courthouse built on the present courthouse square was built about 1856, but the records are unclear as to its specifications. [3]
The county judge contracted to have a courthouse and schoolhouse built there in 1859. Construction began, but by 1865 neither building had been completed. The Lyon County Courthouse is located in Rock Rapids, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The courthouse is the second building the county has used for court functions and county administration.
