Union County is a county located in the southern part of the U.S. state of Iowa.As of the 2020 Census, the population was 12,138. [1] The county seat is Creston. [2] Organized at a time of tensions before the Civil War, the county was named in 1853 for the union that people wanted to preserve.
The third courthouse, completed in 1890, was built in Creston by the citizens of that town as an inducement to have the county seat moved there. The present courthouse replaced it in 1952. A $300,000 bond issue passed in 1946, and the Modernist structure was completed in 1952. [ 2 ]
