A Master of Public Administration (MPA) is a specialized professional graduate degree in public administration that prepares students for leadership roles, similar or equivalent to a Master of Business Administration but with an emphasis on the issues of public services.
MPA degrees have been offered at Cornell University since 1946. They were originally offered through the Cornell Institute for Public Affairs. In fall 2021, when the Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy was founded at Cornell, the program was renamed and became a major component of new school. [1]

The Maxwell School was dedicated on October 3, 1924, and was the first program to offer a graduate professional degree in public administration. That Master of Public Administration program is the oldest continuously operating, university-based MPA in the United States. [6]
That same year, the department began offering a Master of Public Administration degree. The program consisted of 36 credit hours of coursework following the early guidelines of the National Association of Public Administration and Public Affairs. Further changes to the program expanded the course of study to a 40 credit hour program.
