The fort was the first site of the United States District Court for the Western District of Arkansas, which had jurisdiction over western Arkansas and all of Indian Territory. It began operations in 1875 with the appointment of Isaac C. Parker as the first federal district judge here. The town of Fort Smith, Arkansas developed around the fort.
General Smith had ordered Army topographical engineer Stephen H. Long (1784–1864) to find a suitable site on the Arkansas River for a fort. General Smith never visited the town or the forts that bore his name. A stockade was built and occupied from 1817 until 1822 by a small troop of regulars commanded by Major William Bradford.
Its northern terminus is at I-40 and US 71 at Alma and its southern terminus is at I-540 and US 71 in south Fort Smith. US 71 Bus. passes through the towns of Alma, Van Buren and Fort Smith. One half mile south of I-40 at Alma, US 71 Bus. intersects US 64 and overlaps it to downtown Fort Smith and the junction of Arkansas Highway 22.
