The Athens Suburban Railway (Greek: Προαστιακός Αθήνας, romanized: Proastiakós Athínas), officially the Athens Suburban and Regional Railway, [3] is a commuter rail service that connects the city of Athens and its metropolitan area with other places in Attica, Boeotia, Corinthia and the city of Chalcis in Euboea.
Its services were transferred to Larissis Station upon the opening of the Suburban Railway line to Corinth on 27 September 2005. [9] [10] In 2005, TrainOSE was created as a brand within OSE to concentrate on rail services and passenger interface. In 2008, all Athens Suburban Railway services were transferred from OSE to TrainOSE.
By 1835 plans were being put to the Greek state to construct a railway line from Athens to the port of Piraeus. Twenty-two years later, in 1857, a contract for its construction was signed and the work commenced. It took four different companies a further twelve years to lay the 8.8 kilometres (5.5 mi) of track, the work being completed in 1869. [6]
