April 21, 1994 (increase) Tifton Commercial Historic District, in Tifton in Tift County, Georgia, is a historic district that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1986 and expanded in 1994. The original listing was portions of 10 blocks including buildings from the 1890s to the late 1930s, most built of brick.
The majority of the district is residential. The site is roughly bounded by 14th St., Goff, & 2nd Sts. & Forrest Ave. Gas stations, boarding houses, motels, and restaurants were built in the district from the mid-1920s through the 1950s to serve U.S. Highway 41, which was – and still is – a major tourism route between Georgia and Florida.
The college is named after Abraham Baldwin, a signer of the United States Constitution from Georgia and the first president of the University of Georgia. ABAC was established in 1908 as the Second District A&M School. The name was changed to the South Georgia A&M College in 1924, and to the Georgia State College for Men in 1929.
