Longbow: 1d4 + str modifier + dex modifier damage; on a crit, add double your strength modifier instead. I feel like this adequately represents what draw power gives you: a weaker PC would be able to use the bow, but not very well, and weaker PCs would be better off with a short bow.
You can train in the longbow as a tool but not a weapon, like as a tool to start fires, or if you play the ...
Composite bows allowing for Str never made sense. There are only two types of bow: a big one, usually made of a single material (like the English longbow, or the bows used by tribal societies in Africa and South America) and the composite bow, which uses different materials to allow a smaller bow to pack the same punch as a large one (like the bows used by mounted archers).
its a weapon with the heavy quality when used as a longbow. when it becomes an improvised weapon it loses all traits, doing 1d4+str damage only. The only quality you get for using a ranged weapon as a melee is the 1d4+str with a str based attack roll. as such, it loses the heavy tag when used as a melee weapon.
This magic bow can only be used by those with a 17 or higher strength. It is +1 to hit and adds the user's strength modifier to damage along with dexterity like normal. It does double damage to inanimate objects, rumored to have once puncturing holes through a dozen axe heads with ease. D.
No, the shield takes up a hand and you need both to use a bow. The bow is listed as having the two-handed property making it impossible to simultaneously use a shield. You can look for yourself in the PHB under the equipment section, page 147 for two-handed property and 144 for shields specifically stating that a shield takes up one hand.
May 5, 2019. #3. It does make it slightly more dangerous to give out both magic weapons and ammo. I typically only make ammo that does special things against certain monsters. A giant killer arrow deals (+4d6) vs. giants, or the PC could waster it on a goblin for the normal (1d6) damage. Also, ammo is used up once shot and cannot be re-used.
Charlaquin said: I’d suggest giving bows the Finesse property. A crossbow is drawn by mechanical power, so the effectiveness of a shot is all about precision (dexterity). But a bow is drawn by manpower alone, and how much damage you can do with one has as much to do with the draw weight you can handle (Strength).
Darkvision is important for this character IMO. The extra movement speed is essential for the get away. Access to a longbow is also important. fighter isn’t really needed as you’ll have advantage/surprise. Once your damage is sufficiently high you may do battlemaster 3 for precision attack or a d8 damage dice.
