Seattle Opera is an American opera company based in Seattle, Washington. The company's season runs from August through late May, comprising five or six operas of eight to ten performances each, often featuring double casts in major roles to allow for successive evening presentations.
A non-profit, the theatre company is supported by individual and corporate donations, government sources, and box office ticket sales. The 5th's subscriber season programming includes six to seven shows per year, a mix of locally produced revivals of musical theatre classics, and premieres of bound-for-Broadway shows, and national touring musicals.
The Who's rock opera Tommy was first produced as a full stage production in 1971 by the Seattle Opera, and included Bette Midler in the roles of the Acid Queen and Mrs. Walker. Soundgarden's Fopp EP was recorded at the Moore Theatre in 1988. Alice in Chains' Live Facelift home video release was filmed at the Moore Theatre in 1990.

The St. Charles/Rector Hotel was constructed next door on Third Avenue in 1912–13; it was originally interconnected to the opera house at the balcony level. [1] Although the Grand was the twenty-second playhouse in Seattle's history and it was a mere 17 years old when it burned, by that time it was the oldest Seattle playhouse still in use. [5]
The Seattle Opera company was founded in 1963 and held its first season in the Opera House in 1964. Pacific Northwest Ballet was founded in 1972 and held its first season in the Opera House in 1973. Seattle Symphony held its final concert in the Opera House on June 30, 1998, and moved to the newly completed Benaroya Hall soon after. [3]
In 2007 Amelia became Seattle Opera's first new commission in 25 years. [1] The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation issued a grant of $500,000 in 2009 to underwrite the first two revivals of the world premiere production.
