Splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) is a type of marginal zone lymphoma, a cancer made up of B-cells that replace the normal architecture of the white pulp of the spleen. The neoplastic cells are both small lymphocytes and larger, transformed lymphoblasts , and they invade the mantle zone of splenic follicles and erode the marginal zone ...
Splenic lymphoma with villous lymphocytes is a rare type of lymphoma that involves mature B cells. Older names include lymphoma simulating hairy cell leukemia and lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma with circulating villous lymphocytes. The characteristic villous lymphocytes will appear in a blood smear of the peripheral blood of patients with this type ...
Occurs in older adults, usually involves lymph nodes, bone marrow and spleen, most patients have peripheral blood involvement, indolent. B-cell prolymphocytic leukemia; Lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (such as Waldenström macroglobulinemia) Splenic marginal zone lymphoma; Hairy cell leukemia; Plasma cell neoplasms:
These malignancies appear to have been primarily marginal zone B-cell lymphomas of the splenic marginal zone B-cell, splenic lymphoma/leukemia unclassifiable, hairy cell leukemia, and possibly Waldenström's macroglobulinemia. MBL-MZ requires further studies to evaluate its frequencies, rate of progression to malignancy, and treatment.
Mummified RSCs (compact nucleus, basophilic cytoplasm, no nucleolus) are also associated with classical Hodgkin's lymphoma while popcorn cells (small cell with hyper-lobulated nucleus and small nucleoli) are lymph histiocytic (L-H) variant of Reed–Sternberg cells and are associated with nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL).
In some instances, the cancerous cells can accumulate in the spleen and result in splenomegaly. [10] CLL can be grouped with small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL) as one disease with two clinical presentations. [21] Whereas, with CLL, diseased cells propagate from within the bone marrow, in SLL they propagate from within the lymphatic tissue. [21]
