Brookline (/ ˈ b r ʊ k l aɪ n / ⓘ) is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States, and part of the Boston metropolitan area.An exclave of Norfolk County, Brookline borders six of Boston's neighborhoods: Brighton, Allston, Fenway–Kenmore, Mission Hill, Jamaica Plain, and West Roxbury.
Brookline Village is one of the major commercial and retail centers of the town of Brookline, Massachusetts, United States. Located just north of Massachusetts Route 9 and west of the Muddy River , it is the historic center of the town and includes its major civic buildings, including town hall and the public library.
The town was incorporated in 1705, and the site for its first meeting house and cemetery were chosen near what was at the time its geographic center. Brookline is unusual in Massachusetts in that its first town hall still survives: it is a stone structure built in 1825, now serving as the parish hall of the First Parish Church on Walnut Street. In 2018, Brookline's Town Meeting approved a warrant article to rename the school, citing Edward Devotion's ownership of slaves. [9] The new name was decided by a community wide process. The school was formerly known as the Coolidge Corner School. In November 2019, members of the town voted to change the name to Florida Ruffin Ridley school.
The site is located at 99 Warren Street, in the Green Hill section of Brookline. Olmsted bought the Clark homestead, an 1810 Federal farmhouse, in 1883, to be near his frequent collaborator, H. H. Richardson, whose home and office were nearby.
