A district of an Indian state is an administrative geographical unit, headed by a district magistrate or a deputy commissioner, an officer belonging to the Indian Administrative Service. Senapati is home to an Autonomous District Council (ADC), which were established under the Manipur (Hill Areas) Districts Council Act of 1971. However as opposed to 6th Schedule Autonomous District Council , the Autonomous District Councils under the Manipur Act have limited legislative powers. [ 24 ]
The district headquarters is located at Kamjong. It shares a long international border with Myanmar. The district is bounded by Myanmar in the east, Kangpokpi district in the West, Ukhrul district in the north and Tengnoupal district in the south. The terrain of the district is hilly with varying heights of 913 m to 3114 m (MSL).
The area of Khoupum Valley is around 6 sq km. It is the second largest valley in Manipur after the central Imphal valley. The mean altitude above sea level of these valley is 710m. [3] Irang River flows through the district. At the south-west border of the district Irang River merges into Barak River.
In 1969, when Manipur was divided into five districts, the southern part of the Jiribam subdivision was separated into the Tipaimukh subdivision of the 'Manipur South' district (now in Pherzawl district), and the remaining Jiribam subdivision was included in the 'Manipur Central' district headquartered at Imphal.
