A pair of chaps hanging from the ranch's "6666" insignia. The ranch was established by Samuel Burk Burnett in 1900 after he purchased the land from the Louisville Land and Cattle Company.
For a century-and-a-half, the ranch was owned by Burnett's descendants, until his great-granddaughter died in 2020. In 2022, Sheridan purchased the ranch for $320 million.
In 1868, at the age of nineteen, "Burk" Burnett, as he was known, [3] purchased one hundred head of cattle which were branded '6666,' from Frank Crowley. [4] During the Panic of 1873, he drove 1,100 steers to Wichita, Kansas, and sold them for US$10,000 in 1874, thus making a fortune for the time. [1]
Thomas Lloyd Burnett was born in 1871 in Denton County, Texas.His father, Samuel Burk Burnett, was the owner of the 6666 Ranch.His mother was Ruth (Lloyd) Burnett. He moved to Wichita County, Texas with his parents in 1875, when he was four years old.
