Ellesmere Port (/ ˈ ɛ l z m ɪər / ELZ-meer) is a port town in the Cheshire West and Chester borough in Cheshire, England.Ellesmere Port is on the south-eastern edge of the Wirral Peninsula, six miles (ten kilometres) north of Chester, on the bank of the Manchester Ship Canal.
The town of Ellesmere Port had been a municipal borough from 1955 to 1974 with a borough council. [11] The first elections to the new Ellesmere Port Borough Council created under the Local Government Act 1972 were held in 1973, initially operating as a shadow authority until the new arrangements came into effect on 1 April 1974.
Ellesmere Port and Neston was a constituency [n 1] represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2015 by Justin Madders of the Labour Party. [n 2]Further to the completion of the 2023 review of Westminster constituencies, the seat will be subject to boundary changes which will involve the loss of Neston to the new constituency of Chester North and Neston.
Most of the borough is covered by civil parishes, which form a second tier of local government for their areas. [8] The exceptions are Chester and Ellesmere Port which are unparished, with the Cheshire West and Chester councillors for those areas instead serving as charter trustees. [9] [10]
It is maintained by the Cheshire West and Chester Local Education Authority. The school educates pupils from 11–18 as it has a Sixth Form. It is a specialist Technology College. [1] It is situated on the A5032 Chester Road. The area known as Whitby is further north along the road, and nearer to Ellesmere Port Catholic High School and Whitby Hall.
In 2007, as part of a revival of some industries, ports and shipbuilding in Britain, Ellesmere Port docks were re-opened. Ellesmere Port & Bromborough, Wirral West, Birkenhead Wirral South was a constituency [ n 1 ] in Merseyside in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament . It was represented from 1997 until 2024 by members of the Labour Party .
Justin Piers Richard Madders (born 22 November 1972) is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ellesmere Port and Bromborough, previously Ellesmere Port and Neston, since 2015. [1] [2] He has served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Employment Rights, Competition and Markets since July 2024. [3]
