"Soon May the Wellerman Come", also known as "Wellerman" or "The Wellerman", is a folk song in ballad style [2] first published in New Zealand in the 1970s. The "wellermen" were supply ships owned by the Weller brothers , three merchant traders in the 1800s who were amongst the earliest European settlers of the Otago region of New Zealand.
[1] [2] In 2021, they were one of the remixers of "Wellerman", a sea shanty originally recorded by the British singer Nathan Evans. The Official Chart Company gave the remixers a chart credit alongside the singer (as Nathan Evans x 220 Kid x Billen Ted) with the remix of the song topping the UK Singles Chart in March 2021.
Evans planned to release a five-song EP of sea shanties in 2021. Following on from "Wellerman", two versions of the song, including a remix by British songwriter and producer Digital Farm Animals, [5] were released for digital download and streaming by Polydor and UMG on 25 June 2021, alongside accompanying music videos.
