Odzala-Kokoua is an approximately 13,500-square-kilometre (5,200 sq mi) national park and biosphere reserve in northwestern Republic of the Congo, established in 1935. [1] [3] [4] The park has preserved old-growth rainforest and variable terrain, ranging from 350-metre (1,150 ft) tall hills to dense jungle and numerous glades. [5]
This park, along with the other two reserved parks within the larger Sangha Reserve, is secluded from all economic activity involving roads and human interference, which has resulted in its maintenance as a pristine rainforest. [12] [7] [14] The park lies within the forest area of Congo which forms 11% of the total area of the country.
The Guineo-Congolian region is a tropical, lowland rain forest area, typified by the forests of the Congo Basin. The terrain is generally under 1,000 m (3,300 ft) and the annual rainfall is typically in the range 1,600 to 2,000 mm (63 to 79 in). [ 1 ]
