On the London Underground, fluffers or track cleaning teams are people employed to clean the tracks in the tunnels. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The passage of the trains through the tunnels draws in dust and rubbish, and removing this debris is essential to maintain the safety of the Underground, as it would otherwise create a fire hazard.
Ballast cleaning removes this worn ballast, screens it and replaces the "dirty" worn ballast with fresh ballast. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] The advantage of ballast cleaning is that it can be done by an on-track machine without removing the rail and sleepers , and it is therefore cheaper than a total excavation.
Over the years, London Underground has acquired various types of engineering stock to help with the construction of new lines and maintenance of existing lines. Some of these wagons were inherited from its predecessors, many were built new and some were acquired second-hand from the main-line railways.
Tube cleaning is the process whereby the boiler tubes of steam locomotives are cleaned out, removing soot and ash in order to ensure the effective generation of the draught for the fire. This was often done with steam lances or compressed air and accompanied by brushing as required.
Loram provides maintenance of way services to Class I and shortline railroads, rapid transit systems, and commuter rail systems [2] worldwide. [6] The Railway Supply Institute said in 2015 that Loram was "one of the leading suppliers of track maintenance machinery and services in North America and the global market". [2]
One of the 1960 Stock trains was retained by LUL and remained in use as track recording train, running with 1973 Stock trailer TRC666. It was overhauled at Eastleigh Works in 2019. [9] The original 1960 track recording cars were scrapped because of asbestos contamination, and two of the retired motor cars were converted to replace them. [7]
