Rebecca [a] (/ r ɪ ˈ b ɛ k ə /) appears in the Hebrew Bible as the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob and Esau. According to biblical tradition, Rebecca's father was Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram, also called Aram-Naharaim. [3] Rebecca's brother was Laban the Aramean, and she was the granddaughter of Milcah and Nahor, the brother ...
Laban first appears in the Hebrew Bible in Genesis 24:29–60 as the grown spokesman for his father Bethuel's house; he was impressed by the gold jewelry given to his sister on behalf of Isaac, and played a key part in arranging their marriage. Twenty years later, Laban's nephew Jacob was born to Isaac and Rebekah.
They have argued that Bethuel, who is identified as Rebecca's father by the priestly source, was a later addition to the text, and that Rebecca was the daughter of Milcah and Nahor. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] According to Bible in the book of Genesis 24:15, Milcah is the Grandmother of Rebecca and her father is Bethuel.
In his retelling of the story, Josephus reported that Rebekah told Abraham's servant, “my father was Bethuel, but he is dead; and Laban is my brother; and, together with my mother, takes care of all our family affairs, and is the guardian of my virginity.” [17]
Rebecca intervenes to save her younger son Jacob from being murdered by her elder son, Esau. [12] At Rebecca's urging, Jacob flees to a distant land to work for his mother's brother, Laban. [13] She explains to Isaac that she has sent Jacob to find a wife among her own people. Jacob does not immediately receive his father's inheritance.
The genealogies of Genesis provide the framework around which the Book of Genesis is structured. [1] Beginning with Adam, genealogical material in Genesis 4, 5, 10, 11, 22, 25, 29–30, 35–36, and 46 moves the narrative forward from the creation to the beginnings of the Israelites' existence as a people.
