The facility, which was designed by William Cumming Joass, [2] was built as a memorial to Dr William Ross and opened in 1873. [3] Additions included a new isolation hospital in 1909 and a new maternity wing in 1939 and, after joining the National Health Service in 1948, a new out-patient department opened in 1962.
By 1939 the hospital had 555 beds. [7] Implementation of a development plan brought new laboratories, a theatre suite and teaching facilities in 1967. [8] After all inpatient and accident and emergency services had been transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, the Glasgow Victoria Infirmary closed in May 2015. [9]

The Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) is a large teaching hospital. With a capacity of around 1,000 beds, the hospital campus covers an area of around 8 hectares (20 acres), and straddles the Townhead and Dennistoun districts on the north-eastern fringe of the city centre of Glasgow, Scotland. It is managed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
The Glasgow School of Art, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Glasgow Film Theatre are located in Garnethill. It is also the location of Scotland's oldest and first purpose-built synagogue Garnethill Synagogue, founded in 1879, and the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School. Garnethill is also home to St. Aloysius' RC Church, built in 1910.
