Boxer Johnny Joca won the NCAA national boxing championship in the 135-pound weight class in 1940. Joca was the first Florida Gators athlete, in any sport, to win an individual NCAA national championship. Phillip D. The season was Steve Spurrier's fifth as the head coach of the Florida Gators football team.
