The boys division is made up of seven Catholic schools and one nondenominational Christian school in the Western and Southern portions of the San Francisco Bay Area. The girls division includes all of the co-ed schools in the WCAL, along with Presentation High School (all-female school).
The longest period of time either school has held the trophy is 12 years, by St. Ignatius (1974–1985). Although the schools had been rivals since the late 1800s, the Bruce–Mahoney Trophy was not inaugurated until 1947, and at the time only consisted of boys sports (both schools were all-boys institutions until the late 20th century).

The words and music of St. Ignatius' alma mater were composed by the school's band director, Mikey Eaton, in August 1937. His band debuted the alma mater at halftime during a football game on October 1, 1937, replacing their customary "Victory March". In 1958, St. Ignatius gave St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati permission to adapt the song.
