Kampala's metropolitan area consists of the city proper and the neighboring Wakiso District, Mukono District, Mpigi District, Buikwe District and Luweero District. It has a rapidly growing population that is estimated at 6,709,900 people in 2019 by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics [ 7 ] in an area of 8,451.9 km 2 (3,263.3 square miles).

Manafwa is located approximately 32 kilometres (20 mi), by road, southeast of the city of Mbale, the largest metropolitan area in the sub-region. [2] This is approximately 247 kilometres (153 mi), northeast of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. [3]
Kawempe lies on the main highway between Kampala and Masindi. It began as a trading center in the 1950s but has mushroomed into a busy, albeit disorganized, metropolitan area with businesses, small industries, retail shops and a thriving farmers market. Many of the surrounding villages have been turned into low income housing.
