[14] Most of the church dates from the 15th century, with its tower dating from around 1190.
St. Michael's College was established in Grove Road, Hitchin—next to the site of a new Catholic church—in 1903 by Fr. A. Prével of the Society of Saint Edmund.In 1925, the priests from the Order of Augustinians of the Assumption assumed control of both the church and the college.

The original motherhouse is at Pontigny, but since the expulsion of the religious institutes the superior general first moved to Hitchin, England. The Edmundites gave up both the school and the parish in Hitchin in 1925 due to financial difficulties, relinquishing control to the Order of Augustinians of the Assumption. [13] [14]
The school was established in 1958, on a site adjacent to the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Cheshunt. Construction on a new site off Lieutenant Ellis Way began in 2008, with completion in 2010. The project cost over £33 million. [3] A memorial to those who died in the crash of a B24 US Bomber in 1944 was built on the school's approach road. [4]
