The park was designated in 1956 as the High Vogelsberg Protected Area (Landschaftsschutzgebiet Hoher Vogelsberg) with an area of 225 km² and renamed in 1957 to the High Vogelsberg Conservation Park (Naturschutzpark Hoher Vogelsberg). Between 1963 and 1969 it was expanded to 384.47 km², in 1967 it was renamed as the High Vogelsberg Nature Park.
