Saorview is Ireland's national DTT service. The Irish word saor means "free"; thus it is a partial calque of Freeview, the name of the DTT service of the United Kingdom. Saorview is available from 64 DTT transmitters covering 98% of the population as of the end of Q3 2012.

The RTÉ News channel is an Irish free-to-air news television network operated by Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). The channel launched as RTÉ News Now available exclusively online on 12 June 2008. The channel began broadcasting as a free-to-air channel on 29 October 2010 on Saorview. The channel broadcasts free-to-air and commercial-free. [1]
An official licence was granted for the satellite service in 1997 at which time digital broadcasts began making this the first digital television channel in Ireland beating RTÉ by years. During the UHF years while the station was not airing its own content they would broadcast a relay of UK Channel 5 .
Virgin Media Ireland confirmed it would launch a new channel in August 2022, at a Virgin Media Showcase event. The channel is currently available on Saorview , Virgin Media and Sky . The channel made it to Virgin Media Play on the 2nd of September, 2024, following the rebrand.
