Margaret Clifford (née Russell), Countess of Cumberland (7 July 1560 – 24 May 1616) was an English noblewoman and maid of honor to Elizabeth I. Lady Margaret was born in Exeter, England to Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford and Margaret St John.
He was born at Clifford Castle, [citation needed] Herefordshire, a son of Roger de Clifford (died 1282), himself a grandson of Walter II de Clifford, feudal baron of Clifford, [1] [2] by his wife Isabella de Vipont (died 1291), one of the two daughters and co-heiresses of Robert II de Vipont (died 1264), feudal baron of Appleby, grandson of Robert I de Vieuxpont (died 1227/8).
Martin Clifford (c. 1624–1677) was an English author, poet, and educator who served as Master of the Charterhouse School. A prominent Restoration wit and freethinker, Clifford is most noteworthy for his influential 1674 book 'A Treatise of Humane Reason.'
