Spry was born in New Zealand in 1911 on either 6 June (death entry) or 6 July (birth entry) [2] to Palmer and Isabel Spry. In his youth Spry was a talented swimmer. He was New Zealand champion at breaststroke and only narrowly missed out on selection for the New Zealand swim team for the 1934 British Empire Games. [3]

William Spry (January 11, 1864 – April 21, 1929) was an American politician who was the third governor of the State of Utah. He is the namesake of the William Spry Agriculture Building that houses the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food.
Spry died in 1802 and is supposedly buried under the clock tower of St Margaret's, Westminster. [3] William was descended from the Spry family of Roseland, Cornwall, which bred many army and navy officers.
