The weight of an A-series sheet of a given paper weight can be calculated by knowing the ratio of its size to the A0 sheet. For example, an A4 sheet is 1 ⁄ 16 the size of an A0 sheet, so if it is made from 80 g/m 2 paper, it weighs 1 ⁄ 16 of 80 g (2.8 oz), which is 5 g (0.18 oz).
A0 is defined so that it has an area of 1 m 2 (11 sq ft) before rounding to the nearest 1 millimetre (0.039 in). The precise origins of the dimensions of US letter-size paper (8.5 × 11 in) are not known. The American Forest & Paper Association says that the standard US dimensions have their origin in the days of manual papermaking, the 11-inch length of the standard paper being about a quarter of "the average maximum stretch of an experienced vatman's arms". A1 is half the size of a sheet of A0 (i.e., 594 mm × 841 mm), such that two sheets of A1 placed side by side are equal to one sheet of A0. A2 is half the size of a sheet of A1, and so forth. Common sizes used in the office and the home are A4 and A3 (A3 is the size of two A4 sheets).
