An early warning system (EWS), sometimes called a between-the-flags or track-and-trigger chart, is a clinical tool used in healthcare to anticipate patient deterioration by measuring the cumulative variation in observations, most often being patient vital signs and level of consciousness. [1]

Melanoma has one of the higher survival rates among cancers, with over 86% of people in the UK and more than 90% in the United States surviving more than 5 years. [18] [19] Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, globally accounting for at least 40% of cancer cases.

If a person notes that they have a skin lesion with some of these characteristics, a dermatologist would be able to help them with further evaluation. If melanoma is detected and treated early before it spreads in a process called metastasis, it carries a good prognosis.
