Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children's Hospital (more commonly known as Sacred Heart Medical Center or simply Sacred Heart) is a 648-bed general hospital in Spokane, Washington. It employs more than 4,000 health care professionals and support staff; its medical staff consists of over 800 specialists and primary care doctors.
Providence Health Systems was established by the Sisters of Providence of Holyoke in 1984. In 1998, Providence Health of Holyoke, Massachusetts merged with Allegany Health System and Eastern Mercy Health System in Radnor, Pennsylvania to form "Catholic Health East", which has 23 hospitals from Maine to Florida and was the eighth-highest-grossing hospital chain in the nation.
From 2002 to 2010, Arnold Schaffer served as Chief Executive of Providence Health & Services California. Prior to Schaffer, from 1996 to 1999, Michael Madden served as CEO for the Providence Health System LA Service Area. Prior to this, he served as chief executive of Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, a post held since 1993.
