Sulakshana has never been married, after actor Sanjeev Kumar turned down her marriage proposal. [1] She fell on hard times after she stopped getting work. Her sister Vijayta Pandit and brother-in-law, music composer Aadesh Shrivastava , had plans to compose a devotional album for her, but Aadesh died before he could. [ 2 ]
The story opens at college, where an impoverished student named Raja (Rajesh Khanna) dreams of making it big and winning his true love Nisha (Sulakshana Pandit). His rival for her affections, Ranjit (Ranjeet) is the class bully and a cheat; but Ranjit's father and Nisha's father are close friends and want their children to marry when they graduate.
Ranjit is now the Inspector General of Police, and Laxmi still hopes to be reunited with her children. Pappu has been adopted by a bandit named Lakhan Singh, who re-names him Shambhu, and brings him up with his other son, Shankar. Pinky has been adopted by a widow, who has re-named her Sulakshana, who makes a living as a petty thief.
Vijayta comes from a musical family originating in Pili Mandori Village in Hissar district of Haryana state. Pandit Jasraj is her uncle. Her older sister is Sulakshana Pandit, and like her, is an actress and playback singer.
