The American University of Puerto Rico (AUPR) was a private university in Puerto Rico with campuses in Bayamón and Manatí. [1] [2] The university was founded in 1963 as the American Business College, and offered undergraduate studies in arts, business administration, education, and sciences, and graduate studies in criminal justice.
Founded in 1981, the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, School of Optometry (IAUPR) [1] offers a four-year Doctor of Optometry program and is located in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. In 1992, the School of Optometry became a separate autonomous academic unit within the Inter American University of Puerto Rico [2] system.
The Inter American University was founded as Polytechnic Institute of Puerto Rico in 1912 by Rev. John Will Harris and his brother Clarence Harris. It was founded as an elementary and high school in the Lomas de Santa Marta sector of the town of San Germán in land now occupied by the university's San Germán Campus.

Two theories exist about the origin of the name Bayamón. According to one, it was named after the local cacique, Bahamon.The other theory states the name was derived from the Taino word Bayamongo, which is the native name of the river that runs across this region, implying that Bayamón is the area around this main river, which later on became the center of the city's development.
