Invasive candidiasis is an infection (candidiasis) that can be caused by various species of Candida yeast. Unlike Candida infections of the mouth and throat (oral candidiasis) or vagina (Candidal vulvovaginitis), invasive candidiasis is a serious, progressive, and potentially fatal infection that can affect the blood (), heart, brain, eyes, bones, and other parts of the body.
Overgrowth of several species, including C. albicans, can cause infections ranging from superficial, such as oropharyngeal candidiasis (thrush) or vulvovaginal candidiasis (vaginal candidiasis) and subpreputial candidiasis, which may cause balanitis, to systemic, such as fungemia and invasive candidiasis.
Candidiasis is a fungal infection due to any species of the genus Candida (a yeast). [4] When it affects the mouth , in some countries it is commonly called thrush . [ 3 ] Signs and symptoms include white patches on the tongue or other areas of the mouth and throat. [ 3 ]
The most common serious fungal infections in people with COVID-19 include aspergillosis and invasive candidiasis. [26] COVID-19–associated mucormycosis is generally less common, but in 2021 was noted to be significantly more prevalent in India. [10] [27]
Candidiasis is known to cause gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms particularly in immunocompromised patients or those receiving steroids (e.g. to treat asthma) or antibiotics. Recently, there is an emerging literature that an overgrowth of fungus in the small intestine of non-immunocompromised subjects may cause unexplained GI symptoms.
It is one of the few species of the genus Candida which cause candidiasis in humans. Often, candidiasis is acquired in hospitals by patients with weakened immune systems. C. auris can cause invasive candidiasis in which the bloodstream, the central nervous system, and internal organs are infected.
If an infection involves interdigital candidiasis, paronychia and diaper rash, subject is likely to have cutaneous candidiasis. [17] Otherwise, if an infection involves body fluid and internal organs damages, subject will experience pulmonary candidiasis, invasive and disseminated candidiasis, gastrointestinal candidiasis and candidemia. [17]
Rezafungin, sold under the brand name Rezzayo (by Melinta Therapeutics), is a medication used for the treatment of invasive candidiasis. [2] It is an echinocandin antifungal [1] [4] that acts as a fungal β-glucan synthase inhibitor.
