Gilmer is a city in, and the county seat of, Upshur County, Texas, United States. [4] It is best known for being the home of the East Texas Yamboree and the birthplace of popular music singers Don Henley of the Eagles band and Johnny Mathis, as well as blues musician Freddie King. Its population was 4,843 at the 2020 census.
Upshur County is a county located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas.As of the 2020 census, the population was 40,892. [1] The county seat is Gilmer. [2] The county is named for Abel P. Upshur, who was U.S. Secretary of State during President John Tyler's administration.
The Texas Killing Fields is a title used to roughly denote the area surrounding the Interstate Highway 45 corridor southeast of Houston, where since the early 1970s, more than 30 bodies have been found, and specifically to a 25-acre patch of land in League City, Texas [1] where four women were found between 1983 and 1991.
SH 300 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 80 on the west side of Longview, and travels northwest through residential sections of the city. The route continues to the northwest, passing through agricultural sections of southeastern Upshur County before reaching its terminus at U.S. Route 271 and State Highway 155 on the far southern edge of Gilmer.
