The cost - of both gold and time - of copying spells into a wizard's spellbook represents the time taken to decode the other wizard's personal notation for their casting. For each level of the spell, the process takes 2 hours and costs 50 gp.

A wizard learns 2 spells per level, and starts with 6 at level 1, totalling 44 spells known. They prepare a number (INT+Level) of spells from that list each day to be able to cast. Wizards can also copy spells from spellbooks and scrolls they encounter, adding those to their spells known.

The Spells Known column of the Bard table shows when you learn more bard spells of your choice. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the table. For instance, when you reach 3rd level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level. Additionally, when you gain a level in this class ...

  5. Yes. Any character who is proficient with a particular type of armor can cast spells while wearing that type of armor with no penalty. There are two primary reasons for this. There are better ways for mages to get a decent Armor Class. For example, Draconic Sorcerers get permanent Mage Armor for free at 1st level, which provides 13 + Dexterity ...

If the possessed body dies near the container, you get a saving throw to not die.

  7. 29. The only ways for a wizard to gain shield proficiency are either multiclassing, or the Moderately Armored feat. Since Moderately Armored requires you to be proficient in light armor, most wizards will need either a multiclass or another feat (Lightly Armored). Note that you can use a shield without proficiency - you just won't be able to ...

The Wizard and Sorcerer from prior editions have now combined into one class, called... the Wizard. Also, the Cleric picked up the same mechanics. (Meanwhile, something mechanically new has emerged in 5e to take the name of 'Sorcerer', which has picked up some different stuff for its defining features, like a spell point mechanic.)

Being a 5 levels Wizard / 4 level Sorcerer allows to have one 5th level spell slot, but the maximum level of spells known and that can be prepared and learned is 3 for the Wizard class and 2 for the Sorcerer class: the slots of higher levels (4 and 5 for the Wizard, 3, 4 and 5 for the Sorcerer) can be used to cast (or upcast) spells of lower ...

  10. Wizards are a "thinking" class. They can do a lot with their spells, but they have to look ahead and guess what spells they might need. Feather Fall could save someone's life, if you suspected lots of falling and prepared it. Having a fixed number of slots of each level is just the way it worked out.

  11. Go for 3 levels of Sorcerer if you want to be more of a Wizard (and keep leveling as a Wizard from there, obviously). This gets you Metamagic with the fewest number of multiclass levels you have to make. If you want to be more of a Wizard, then just accept that your Sorcerer abilities will not be as stellar.
