The first game to be hosted at the new Cape Town Stadium was a Cape Town derby between Ajax Cape Town and Santos on 23 January 2010 as part of the official inauguration of the stadium. Only 20,000 tickets were made available for the event and were sold out by Friday 15 January 2010.
The facility is now run by the City of Cape Town and has an offering two astroturf sports fields. The event was opened by President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma and President of FIFA, Sepp Blatter. [4] In 2013, the centre hosted 537 events, an increase from 514 in 2012. In 2021, it was estimated that the CTICC has contributed R53.2 billion to the country's GDP and R45.2 billion to the Western Cape's economy in the past twenty years. [5]
