Wikipedia depends on donations (there is literally no other meaningful revenue source) and donations go to support Wikipedia both directly (software, hardware, bandwith, operations engineers) and indirectly (chapter activities of all kinds such as local press relationships, GLAM activities, new editor recruitment, etc.).
Note that Dori wasn't referring to the donate link in the sidebar, she was referring to a small-type message underneath "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia", which read "If you enjoy Wikipedia, please consider making a donation to keep the servers running. Thank you!" Personally I thought that message was a good idea.
