Hamilton Place is an enclosed, two-story shopping mall in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States, just off I-75. It was the largest shopping mall in the state of Tennessee from 1987 to 1998. [ 3 ]
In 1978, Charles B. Lebovitz and five associates formed CBL & Associates, Inc. [1] [2] In March 1979, the company built its first mall, the Plaza del Sol Mall in Del Rio, Texas. [2] In 1987, the company built Hamilton Place in Chattanooga, its flagship mall. [2]
In the early 1970s, Loveman's located in the former JCPenney store in Highland Plaza. (In 1972, JCPenney opened at the then new Northgate Mall in nearby Hixson.) In 1980, Loveman's was an original anchor at Walnut Square Mall in Dalton, Georgia. Loveman's final expansion came as an anchor at Hamilton Place Mall in 1987.

The mall was considered the northside competition to now-defunct Eastgate Mall and is now considered a sister property of CBL's Hamilton Place Mall. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] Northgate was later sold by Arlen, being renovated in 1991 and 1997, and eventually ended up with General Growth Properties (GGP) in 2000. [ 2 ]
Hixson has a retail center based around Northgate Mall. Originally built in 1972, it is one of two major mall shopping venues for Chattanooga (the other is the larger Hamilton Place). CBL in 2012 purchased Northgate Mall for $11.5 million and has announced a major renovation for the mall. [7]
