The Dakar Rally (French: Le Rallye Dakar) or simply "The Dakar" (Le Dakar), formerly known as the Paris–Dakar Rally (Le Rallye Paris-Dakar), is an annual rally raid organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO). The rally is an off-road endurance event.
The Paris Dakar Bike Race is a cycle race of 7,000 kilometers through France, Andorra, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania and Senegal organized by Bike Dreams, a Netherlands-based company. The race lasts 10 weeks and is divided in 59 stages and 11 rest days. The races crosses the Sahara desert by the Atlantic Route.
Among the 46 non-competitor fatalities are those of the race's founder Thierry Sabine, 14 news journalists and support crew, 23 spectators, and 4 children. The Dakar Rally has received criticism because of its high mortality rates, with the Vatican Paper describing the event as "the bloody race of irresponsibility". [1]
