Chafyn Grove School is a private co-educational day and boarding preparatory school situated on the edge of the city of Salisbury in Wiltshire, in England's West Country. Founded in 1879 by Mr. W. C. Bird as an all-boys' school, it became Chafyn Grove School in 1916, when it was renamed after its first benefactress, Julia Chafyn Grove. [1]
The school was founded in 1091 at Old Sarum [3] [4] by Saint Osmund, the Bishop of Salisbury and Earl of Dorset, who was canonised in 1456. [5] [6] Osmund was born in Normandy and was a first cousin of William the Conqueror, King of England: William's father, Robert the Magnificent, Duke of Normandy, was the brother of Isabella, Countess of Séez, the mother of Osmund.
Dauntsey's School is a public school (fee-charging boarding and day school) for pupils aged 11–18 in the village of West Lavington, Wiltshire, England. The school was founded in 1542 in accordance with the will of William Dauntesey , a master of the Worshipful Company of Mercers .
In 1961, the school moved to New Wardour Castle near Tisbury in Wiltshire, and extensively renovated the building, which had fallen into a severe state of disrepair. [1] In 1985 there were 130 girls, aged between 11 and 18 years, and 26 teachers at the school. The school closed in July 1990.
