Rumsey Hall School is an independent, coed junior boarding (5 - 9) and day (Pre K - 9) school in Washington, Connecticut.Rumsey Hall enrolls 309 students, and the campus consists of 32 buildings located on 231 acres along the scenic Bantam River in the Litchfield Hills region.
The school only survived until 1851, and was converted for use as a boarding house for summer visitors in 1884. It was converted back to academic use in 1886, but none of its occupants were long-lived. In 1907 the Rumsey Hall School moved into the premises from Seneca Falls, New York, and operated here until 1949.
Marvelwood was founded in 1956 by Robert A. Bodkin and Ian Hanna in Cornwall, Connecticut, on a campus previously occupied by Rumsey Hall School. Ian Hanna named the school after his relative, Donald Grant Mitchell, an American novelist who owned an estate in New Haven, Connecticut, also called Marvelwood. [4] Bodkin remained headmaster until 1981.

He was succeeded as headmaster by Walter Sheehan, John Reydel in 1973, Roderick Clarke in 1978, Thomas Sheehy in 1990, and Rachel E. Stone in 2016. Canterbury became co-educational in the fall of 1971. The School now enrolls around 320 boarding and day students on its campus in New Milford.
