Hawthorn Lodge continued to serve as the headquarters of the council for much of the 20th century, [6] but ceased to be the local seat of government when the enlarged Epping Forest District Council was formed at No. 323 High Street in Epping in 1974. [7] [8] By the late 1980s, the council needed more substantial offices.
Epping Urban District was abolished in 1974 when the modern Epping Forest District was created. A successor parish was created covering the area of the former urban district, with its parish council taking the name Epping Town Council. [17]

[1] It takes its name from the brick bridge over the River Roding, which is situated just to the north of the modern centre, on the road to Theydon Bois.
