It was designed in Italian Renaissance architecture style by James K. Taylor and James A. Wetmore. It served historically as a courthouse and as a post office.

Built in 1835, the old courthouse is a two-story brick structure in Federal style. The building was originally a bank owned by the New Orleans Gas Light and Banking Company.
Louisiana State Route 1 ( LA 1) was one of the 98 original state highways that were established in 1924. It was signed for the Jefferson Highway, an auto trail that ran from New Orleans to Winnipeg.
