IMHO Wilson's translation is great. She captures the excitement and flow of Homer. She moves through the lines at a pace that was a revelation to me. To do this, she leaves a good bit out. If you want literal accuracy, Lattimore is on point (he's really useful as a trot for translating). Reply.
On the other hand I found the ocassional humour of the Odyssey more plaintly enjoyable in Wilson, precisely because of the smooth ease of the translation into something closer to demotic modern English. So in summary my advice would be: read the Odyssey translation by Lattimore first. Then read Wilson’s. 14.
Odyssey Translated by Emily Wilson. I went into reading the Emily Wilson translation of the Odyssey with such high expectations and was so incredibly underwhelmed and disappointed. Am I alone in this opinion? Is there something I’m missing? I just personally felt like it was very pale in comparison to other translations I’ve read. 1.

Emily Wilson is the most enjoyable translation. Pope is the most poetic. Everything else (there is actually a new translation I haven't read but that notwithstanding) is a poor mix in between. I did a class on the Odyssey and honestly I think Wilson did one of the best jobs at translating the epic.
Yes it absolutely is. I did not want to continue listening, so as far as I’m concerned Wilson wasted her time. Maybe one day I’ll get round to reading Wilson’s translation, but I’ve got a lot of other things on, I’m not a specialist, I’ve already read the Odyssey a couple of times, and I have other books to read and a very busy life.
Comparison of Odyssey translations. We quite often get questions on this sub about which translation of Homer is the best. The answer is usually Lattimore for faithfulness to the Greek, Fagles for poetry, and some of the newer translations (Lombardo, Wilson, Mitchell, etc.) for ease of reading. And so on.
this is a nitpicky gripe about a choice she makes constantly that bugs me: she refers to any city, any city-state, more or less any large polity as a “town.” she did this in the odyssey too “sacked the holy town of troy” but whatever the root word is there (i don’t read ancient greek) seems to occur far less in that poem. reading ...
And second, I actually prefer the Robert Fagles translation shown in the article. At least I prefer that passage of it to Emily Wilson's version. Hers reads as too modern, it doesn't really even feel like the Odyssey to me, there's no sense of history or antiquity to it. Also, while reading the Fagles translation I feel like the line breaks ...
