Chuck E. Cheese (formerly known as Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre, Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza, and simply Chuck E. Cheese's) is an American entertainment restaurant chain founded on May 17, 1977, by Atari, Inc.'s co-founder Nolan Bushnell. [1]
In May 1977, Atari opened the first Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre in San Jose, California. [1] The concept was an immediate success, and Bushnell purchased the Pizza Time restaurant from Atari for $500,000 in 1978, stepping down as chairman and forming Pizza Time Theatre Inc. [2] [3]
Bushnell's group of planners finally decided on the name Chuck E. Cheese for the mascot and changed the restaurant's name to Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre. [9] [10] The first Chuck E. In 1985, Showbiz purchased their competitor Chuck E. Cheese (CEC), who had filed for bankruptcy a year earlier. After failing to make progress with CEI, ties were severed in 1990, and Showbiz began replacing the RAE with CEC characters, forming a new show called "Munch's Make Believe Band". [ 9 ]
