Shore Line East (SLE) is a commuter rail service which operates along the Northeast Corridor through southern Connecticut, United States. The rail service is a fully owned subsidiary of the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) and is operated under the CT Rail brand.
CT Rail, stylized as CTrail, is the brand for commuter rail services overseen by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), in the U.S. state of Connecticut, with services on the Hartford Line extending into Massachusetts.
The Shore Line Railway was a part of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad system, running east from New Haven, Connecticut, to New London along the north shore of Long Island Sound. A segment is currently used for commuter service on CT Rail's Shore Line East and regional/express service on Amtrak's high-speed Northeast Corridor.
The station opened on June 7, 2002, for Shore Line East service, with Metro-North service added on June 24, 2002. [1] [5] Hartford Line and New Haven–Springfield Shuttle service began on June 16, 2018. [6] Most Shore Line East and all Hartford Line trains (both Amtrak and CT Rail) stop at the station. [7]
A small wooden westbound shelter, similar to other Shore Line stops east of New Haven, was added in the 1950s. [6] Most commuter service east of New Haven ceased on January 1, 1969, after the New Haven merged into Penn Central, though the Clamdigger continued operation under Penn Central and later Amtrak until January 28, 1972.
Shore Line East service at the station was suspended indefinitely on March 16, 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic. [ 10 ] [ 11 ] Service resumed on October 7, 2024. [ 12 ]
By the mid-2000s, ridership increases rendered the station's 137-space free parking lot for Shore Line East riders insufficient, causing commuters to park in the adjacent Saybrook Junction Marketplace parking lot and along roads in town. In November 2011, the Marketplace began charging a fee for commuters to park in their lot. [7]
It is served by the Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line plus limited CT Rail Shore Line East service. The station has two high-level side platforms, each four cars long, serving the four tracks of the Northeast Corridor. [2]: 22 The station has 294 parking spaces, which are all owned by the state. [3]
