Sunriver is a census-designated place and 3,300-acre (13 km 2) planned residential and resort community in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 2,023 an increase from 1,393 in 2010.
Sunriver's land used to be a lake bed, which dried out and became a meadow. It was a meeting place for Native Americans living in the area and was later adopted by settlers, trappers, and explorers, including Peter Skene Ogden , Kit Carson , and John Fremont , who led expeditions along the Deschutes River in the early-to-mid-19th century. [ 1 ]
Deschutes County is the home of four destination resorts as defined by Oregon's Department of Land Conservation and Development. These resorts are major employers within the county. Three of these resorts, Sunriver, Eagle Crest, and Pronghorn, are among the county's ten largest tax payers. [22]

Lava Butte is a cinder cone in central Oregon, United States, just west of U.S. Route 97 between the towns of Bend, and Sunriver in Deschutes County.It is part of a system of small cinder cones on the northwest flank of Newberry Volcano, a massive shield volcano which rises to the southeast.
Three Rivers South is located in south-central Deschutes County, south of Sunriver and north of La Pine, just west of U.S. Route 97.The Deschutes and Little Deschutes rivers join in the CDP, with the Little Deschutes passing through the eastern part of the CDP and the Deschutes River passing through the west.
The river eventually flowed over the dam, draining the lake and thus forming Benham Falls. Around 1885, J. R. Benham attempted and failed to file a land claim near the falls, though they were later named for him. [3] Today, there are forest roads connecting Benham Falls to Lava Butte, Lava River Cave, and Sunriver Resort.
